TERROIR

The Chianti Classico production area, reaching from Florence to Siena, has maintained its appearance almost entirely intact over the years. History, culture, wild woods, farming and winemaking are the landmarks of this breathtaking corner of Italy.

This cultural environment, together with a very particular climate, the complex composition of the soils and the altitude of this area make the land particularly suited to producing fine wines, an attitude that has its roots in ancient times and has evolved to the actual worldwide fame of Chianti Classico and Supertuscan wines.

The village of Gaiole in Chianti’s history is closely tied to its position at the junction of roads between the Chianti area and the Upper Arno Valley. For this reason, it developed into the market place for the nearby castles, and it has been mentioned in legal documents since 1215. Gaiole and its community joined the Lega del Chianti (Chianti League) in the fourteenth century along with Radda and Castellina. The alliance’s coat of arms was a black rooster that later became the symbol and name of one of the most famous red wines produced here: Chianti Classico.

THE ESTATE

Close to the historical hamlet of San Vincenti, in the locality called Stignano, Tenuta San Vincenti’s estate-farm extends over 60 hectares, completely protected by the surrounding wild forest. The restored ancient farmhouse stands like a precious gem on a carpet of vineyards and olive groves.

The position is superb, with a breathaking view of Monte Amiata and the entire area of the Crete Senesi hills, in a location with one of the most renowned winemaking traditions in the world.

Tenuta San Vincenti’s vineyards are arranged on a hilly ridge oriented from north to south of a rising offshoot from the complex belonging to Mt. Luco, at an altitude ranging from 350 to 550 meters above sea level, with south-eastern and south-western exposure.

Thanks to the orographic altitude of the high and steep hill area and the important presence of the forest that surrounds the estate, the vineyards enjoy protection from winter northerly winds, while in summer, hot weather conditions are not excessive, thanks to a good ventilation and excellent natural drainage.

The soil composition is varied and ranges from a predominantly clayey presence in the lower part, to an important sandy fraction of ancient marine deposits in the upper part, all veined by sandstone and Tuscan flake rocks.

The vines, of Sangiovese and Merlot varieties, with and an average age of twenty years, are planted with a density of 6,000 plants per hectare and trained using the low spurred cordon techniques.
